ePeople is hiring for an RN Unit Manager to work in a facility in the Monroeville area. The Unit Manager oversees the care management of a population of patients within an assigned area, unit, or critical function. The position conducts the nursing process --  assessment, planning, or implementation and evaluation -- under the scope of the State's Nurse Practice Act of Registered Nurse licensure. The position coordinates resource utilization, adherence to the center's clinical systems, and regulatory compliance.

Quality Process

  • Promote an understanding of the vision, mission, plans, and standards of the organization and nursing services within the defined area of responsibility
  • Follows the ongoing QAA process steps, monitors trends, and implements performance improvement initiatives
  • Assures that individuals' rights are honored and that care is delivered according to those rights and the individual's wishes
  • Evaluates the quality and appropriateness of healthcare using root cause analysis and monitors the outcome trends
  • Facilitates and participates with the nursing staff in daily care risk identification and resolution, including communication with the patients, families, and physicians
  • Involves staff in problem-solving and resolution of patient/family and staff complaints/concerns
  • Ensures adherence to Documentation Principles and Guidelines

Leadership Fundamentals

  • Accepts accountability for services provided to recipients

  • Flexes hours when necessary to accommodate staff education; to address patient care issues, and to meet with family members unavailable during routine shift hours
  • Participates in weekend clinical coverage and "on-call" rotation ensuring continuity of patient care, staff supervision, and availability of nursing leadership to families and visitors

Clinical Systems

  • Coordinates nursing care with other healthcare disciplines and assists in integrating services across the continuum of healthcare
  • Promotes nursing process and critical thinking in nursing care delivery
  • Ensures patients' rights, safety, and choices are safeguarded
  • Ensure patients have needed supplies and equipment to properly manage care
  • Participates in clinical risk identification, strategy planning, and risk reduction
  • Makes daily rounds and spot checks documentation accuracy and completeness on new admissions, patients with changes in condition, patients trigger occurrence investigations, and patients to be discharged
  • Visits each newly admitted patient as soon as possible upon arrival, validating accuracy of essentials audit and implementation of risk-reducing measures
  • Oversees and evaluates systems to plan, promote, develop, assess, interpret, validate, and evaluate the implementation of clinical programs, policies, procedures, and forms
  • Oversees and evaluates systems for patient and staff data collection, information systems, and processes to support the practice of nursing care and delivery
  • Oversees and evaluates systems for discharge planning communication to be released with patient
  • Facilitates and participation in occurrence investigation ensuring timely and accurate reporting to nursing administration
  • Ensures staff competency for emergency response and clinical care delivery
  • Ensures infection control standards and biohazard waste procedures are followed

Personnel Development

  • Participates in the recruitment, selection, and retention of personnel
  • Conducts education sessions, unit or functional area team meetings, and competency validation
  • Evaluates the performance of direct report personnel
  • Assures appropriate orientation, education, credentialing, and continuing professional development for personnel
  • Provides guidance for and supervises personnel

Resource Utilization

  • Oversees adequacy and appropriateness of staffing and scheduling personnel with the scope of practice, competencies, patient needs, and complexity of care
  • Adjusts clinical resources and provides support to ensure patients' care needs are met
  • Completes referrals for services as needed by assessed patient needs.
  • Supports and promotes product standards
  • Oversees and evaluates systems to ensure timely medical management and auxiliary service availability

Fiscal Management

  • Assists the Director of Nursing with planning, implementing, monitoring of the budget in assigned areas of responsibility
  • Coordinates patient supply needs and accurate par levels through the ancillary specialist
  • Understands supports and communicates accurate supply charge system.
  • Assures accuracy of the midnight census through understanding and education of the automated clinical system

Supervisory/People Management Responsibilities

  • Assists in planning, coordinating and conducting continuing education programs and special in-service training sessions relevant to the needs of department personnel
  • Staffs the department with capable people
  • Ensures that employees are adequately oriented and trained to perform their duties
  • Reviews employee performance annually and makes recommendations for pay increases, promotions, or performance improvement plans as deemed appropriate
  • Counsels/disciplines personnel as necessary up to and including termination
  • Establishes and maintains effective two-way communication to understand the needs and concerns of employees
  • Properly manages employees' personal information
  • Devotes adequate time and attention to personal development and training, particularly in the management of people resources
  • Receives, investigates, and responds to employee complaints

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintains confidentiality of necessary information
  • Participates in staff meetings, departmental head meetings, and other center meetings and sits on required committees
  • Follows HCR ManorCare Policies and Procedures manual
  • Performs any miscellaneous work assignments as may be required


  • Currently licensed as RN in this state; Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred


  • Two years experience as an RN with 1-year nursing supervisory experience

Physical Demands

  • Primarily large in nature with exerting up to 35 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body; climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, fingering, feeling, talking, hearing, tasting, smelling, near acuity, far acuity, depth perception, accommodation, color vision
